I have decided to start a new music series called Artist Profile where I list my favourite songs from the featured artist. I’m starting off with Christina Aguilera. Not only because she’s been a personal favourite of mine since 2000 but due to the fact that she can celebrate the 20th anniversary for her self-titled debut album which was released on 24 August 1999. Born in 1980 she’s been active on the music scene since 1993, and with a four-octave vocal range she is probably one of the best singers of our time. So, without further ado, let’s dive into my 20 personal favourites from the last 20 years.
Alongside Genie in a Bottle (from her self-titled album Christina Aguilera) this was the first time her name entered my world, and since Mulan was my favourite movie at the time (or at least the only Disney movie I had access to in 1999) Reflection became something special and I dare say it never left my heart.
Moving on to her next album Stripped – which was the first album I ever bought of hers; in my mind it’s quite obvious why this song is on my list of absolute favourites. Not only is it easy to sing along to, it also has a message that resonated, not only with me, but with people around the globe, and that makes it one of the most empowering song of that decade.
3. WALK AWAY
I cannot tell you how much I’ve been singing along to this song! It is beyond amazing which is why it always baffled me that it never got the attention it deserved. Well, no more!
The third song from the Stripped album but I can’t help it as it is her strongest album to date! No quesiton about it. A beautiful R&N ballad featuring Alicia Keys; impossible not to sing along to (huh, see what I did there? *wink wink* I’ll see myself out).
I wasn’t sure if I should include Cruz on my list but then again why not? Another ballad, but my God it’s incredible!
6. GET MINE, GET YOURS
Finally something other than a ballad! I knew it as “track no. 15” and due to my obsession even my mom knew the lyrics to this song! How can you not dance to this song? Or sing along? It never fails to make me happy. The lyrics are probably a bit more controversial in the US than they are here in Denmark where physical love and one-night stands are more socially acceptable.
7. KEEP ON SINGIN’ MY SONG
I remember having a project in school where we had to feature an artist and I chose Christina and this particular song. My classmates were so confused as they clearly expected to hear either Dirrty or Fighter. They definitely thought I was a freak… I mean, more than they already did as I was bullied during those years though not because of liking Christina Aguilera. If you listen to the lyrics it’s really no pickle why I related so heavily to this song as it is about bullying, moving on and finding yourself.
8. OH MOTHER
I must admit that after Stripped is was a little bit disappointing but there are still good songs on Back to Basics. This song in particular is about her own mother and the domestic violence she endured. Definitely one of her most powerful song that shows that she really doesn’t shy away from displaying her own life and in return we got this amazing song.
I don’t know if it says a lot about her or me that I like many of her deeper ballads. She does hurt and melancholy so well it’s heart breaking but I love her for it! (The song starts at 00.25).
10. SAVE ME FROM MYSELF
Simple, classic, beautiful. What’s not to like?
11. NOT MYSELF TONIGHT
Moving on to Bionic which is her 6th album and it is a LOT different but if you like more upbeat songs you can dance, party and work out to then you’re going to love it. And there are some good songs – clearly – but it’s definitely not her strongest album; why I chose not to invest in it.
12. LIFT ME UP
But even on her upbeat album she has a soft and simple ballad and I love her for it! You can’t deny that she is born to sing ballads with a voice like that.
13. ALL I NEED
And again. I’m running out of things to say so here are some lyrics:
Telling the truth to you gives me wings
I am flying high looking at you
You bring me hope when I can’t breathe
And you give me love, you’re all I need
14. YOU LOST ME
Absolutely perfect! Great to sing along to as well.
15. CEASE FIRE
God I really wanted to love the Lotus album but the fact is that I only like two or three songs and that makes this her weakest album to date. Sorry. I really like this song though so it’s not a catastrophe but still. Could have been better.
16. JUST A FOOL
Great song featuring Blake Shelton. If you know anything about the US Country music scene you know that he’s an important gentleman (and an amazing singer!).
Her latest album Liberation is so good it’s crazy. Strong songs, strong messages, and really well written and produced. Especially this song is incredible, not only because it’s one of her best song ever, but because it’s in collaboration with Kanye West and even if you don’t like his music (which I don’t) he is a solid artist and it shows! Furthermore they’ve taken a snippet of Michael Jackson from his Jackson 5 days and incorporated it into the song and the result is WOW!
18. FALL IN LINE
Featuring Demi Lovato, I dare say that if you’ve not yet heard this song then I don’t know what rock you’ve been loving under. It exploded and there’s a reason for that: the message. Yes, yes I know I keep saying that but just do me a favour and listen to the lyrics. If you are a girl, women, or if you have a little girl these lyrics are going to resonate so much! Trust me.
The album is so amazing that I have to take some air so here are some lyrics:
Now why you wanna go and lose that, boy?
Let’s pause for a moment before this commotion takes over
I’m sorry, let’s fix this
Sometimes we can’t kick the habit of being dramatic
It’s almost becoming a sickness
So I say some fucked up shit just to hurt you
But you know I do it all ’cause I love you
So, baby, tell me I’m the one that deserves you
It’s just a very good song. I don’t know what else to say.
So there you have it, my 20 absolute favourite Christina Aquilera songs. Generally I will say that she is an amazing artist. Not just because of her voice but because she pours her heart and soul into her music and that her albums are not just 10-20 songs but an actual story – a true piece of art no matter what type of genre you’re into. I want to end this artist profile with some honourable mentions that didn’t make the list but are still worth listening to. Hopefuly you’ve enjoyed the first blog post in the series. I can’t wait to make more.
